5 Mysterious Medicinal Uses of Cannabis Revealed

As people started to learn more about how to grow marijuana legally, its popularity has been growing like crazy – especially after it was established how many medical benefits it actually brings. Unfortunately, cannabis itself has yet to be recognized by the FDA as a way of treatment.

However, up to this day, the Food and Drug Administration has approved one cannabis-derived drug product called Epidiolex, and three synthetic cannabis-related drug products – Marinol, Syndros, and Cesamet.

The reason why cannabis is still not recognized as a treatment method might have something to do with the fact that there are not enough studies done that would show how exactly a human body suffering from a specific condition behaves. However, the studies that have been conducted so far look very promising.

Here are some of the medicinal uses of cannabis that you might not have known about.

Cancer

It’s common knowledge that scientists have been trying to find a cure for cancer for a while now, unfortunately without success. However, as it turns out, cannabis might be just the thing they have been looking for. While more research still needs to be performed on humans, what we know at the moment looks very promising.

As the scientists from the American Association for Cancer Research performing one of the experiments discovered, cannabis can slow down the process of producing cancer cells, or even stop it completely, in the brain, lungs, and breasts.

What’s more, cannabis can help cancer patients going through chemotherapy, as it lessens nausea and vomiting, which often are its side effects.

Pet’s Pain

Since marijuana is known to help with pain and nausea in humans, why not use it to help your four-legged best friends, right? Well, that’s what the owner of a twelve-year-old Labrador Retriever mix called Miles, who was suffering from cancer, thought when they decided to give him medical marijuana.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, it worked. After being given cannabis, Miles’ appetite came back, and he stopped vomiting. What’s more, he also started to walk and run again. Isn’t it amazing?

Seizure Disorders

We already mentioned the fact that the FDA has approved Epidiolex, which is, in fact, a drug that helps control seizures in children – there must be a reason for that, right? The FDA wouldn’t approve of medication just like that.

Well, the reason was found in 2003, when scientists discovered cannabis potential in treating epilepsy by giving epileptic rats marijuana extract – their seizures stopped after approximately 10 hours.

Withdrawal and Dependency

According to several studies, not only from modern days, cannabis can be a good remedy when fighting with withdrawal in dependence on opiates, benzodiazepines, and alcohol. Some people even referred to it as a gateway drug back.

Cannabis helps not only with the physical symptoms of withdrawal, but also it reduces the stress connected with not being able to take the drug that the person was abusing beforehand.

Psychiatric Symptoms

Cannabis has been proven to help with several psychiatric symptoms. For example, in a person with depression, cannabis caused an improvement in mood.

There are several case studies that support the claim that cannabis is beneficial for patients suffering from psychiatric symptoms. Those include sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, dysthymia, bipolar disorders, etc.

It is worth keeping in mind, though, that when it comes to this use of cannabis, there are different opinions – some emphasize that cannabis can cause certain side effects, which in the long run can be harmful, while some promote the benefits a person can gain from using it.

Depending on a patient, cannabis can be either beneficial or harmful – this is why both the physician and the patient should be open-minded about it, and perform an examination of the topic in relation to that particular case. They also have to keep in mind that it can go both ways.

The Bottom Line

Cannabis has been long known to be very beneficial in medicine. After all, there is a reason why people have been cultivating it for more than 12.000 years. Cannabis even has its own goddess!

However, while it is known that cannabis has health benefits, further research is still needed, as we don’t really know to what extent cannabis is beneficial, and to what harmful. There are, though, some medical conditions in which the safety of cannabis has been proven. Those include anxiety, epilepsy, chronic pain, nausea, and vomiting.

What is important is that before you decide to use cannabis on yourself for medical reasons, you should consult a doctor. They will be able to tell you if its the right decision, and if so, they might give you a prescription for medical cannabis so that you can be sure what you are taking will in no way harm you.
