Depth And Width Of Planter Will Ensure Proper Growth Of Plants

If the planter is not of the right type and quality then your investment to build a home garden may be futile. Improper planter boxes will prevent the plants to grow and reach to its fullest potential and optimal health.

All plants, whether you grow it indoors or it grows naturally outdoors, will need a lot of sunshine, fresh air and nutrients from the soil for its proper growth, healthy and disease free life.

To ensure that you get all of the above, you will need to choose the right type of planters or grow a box that is of the right size, depth and width.

Need for proper depth

Although the optimal growth of any type of plant will usually vary according to its property and size, the root system is more or less similar for all types of plants.

  • Ideally, if you want to grow plants of standard size and variety in garden containers you will usually require at least 10 inches of soil in it. Therefore, it is important to know the depth that you require in each box to ensure and facilitate proper and adequate root growth. This is not possible until enough soil nutrients are reaching to the entire plant.
  • If you want to grow any specific variety of plant apart from the standard ones, you and your plants will be better off if you select a planter that is 12 inches in depth. This will allow you to put in more soil in the pot to ensure proper support and fixation of the plants. Such specific varieties of plants can be determinate, indeterminate, early or late varieties.

In addition to that, most indeterminate types of plants will also require some kind of additional support in the form of a staking or planter cage. Therefore, to support these specific plants, it is better to choose a deep planter so that it can easily anchor the support. A deeper pot whether it is a cheap self-watering planter or any other type will also prevent the entire plant as well as the planter from becoming too heavy at the top and result in a tip over.

Width of the planter

The next thing to consider in a planter is the width of it. Typically, the planter width you require will largely depend on the number of plants that you want to grow in a single container. It will also depend on the final size the plant may attain under favorable conditions.

  • Ideally, if you want to grow a specific type of plant, say for example tomato vine, you must choose a planter that is at least 12 inches in diameter. This will be broad enough to hold a single tomato vine and provide the desired support to it.
  • You must double the width accordingly for each additional plant you want to grow in that specific planter.

You will need much wider garden pots for bigger plants or if you want to grow multiple plants in one single container.
