One of the best things about living in, or near, Pittsburgh is the opportunity to take advantage of the amazing nightlife. They may say that New York is the city that never sleeps, but it’ll only take one night out to show that the people of Pittsburgh don’t exactly hit the sack early either.
One of the most popular ways to pass the time in the evening hours, of course, is to hit the bars and clubs, hang out with good friends, make some new friends, and have some drinks together. And just like any other city, the people of Pittsburgh have their preferences for where they like to get together and have a good time.
Below are some of the most popular establishments in the city. Some attract people for their atmosphere, some for their unusual selection of food and drinks, others for their music, and many simply because they’re just too much fun to miss.
Hot Spots To Hit On Your Night Out In Pittsburgh
No matter what taste your palette is craving or the type of surroundings you’re looking for, there’s something for everyone in the city. Here are a few of the best places to find some nightlife fun—in no particular order.
Bridges & Bourbon
Located in downtown Pittsburgh, Bridges & Bourbon has been described as a stylish bar that dedicates itself to the true art that is mixing and making beverages. Their modern cocktails are made using every trick in the bartender’s book—from unique ways of serving their master mixes to the unusual use of flavored smoke. You’ll see things here that you’ve certainly never seen at any other bar.
You’ll find Apteka in Bloomfield. They are known as one of Pittsburgh’s best restaurants—not to mention the fact that it’s vegan-friendly. It’s a wonderful place to eat, but the bar is not to be missed either. They have a small cocktail menu compared to many other places, but the short list is made up of drinks made with housemade syrups and shrubs, they seem to have a gift for using simple names that give away nothing about the complex flavors you’ll experience. They also have an extensive list of Eastern European beers and some very inventive non-alcoholic selections, too.
Perhaps not quite so hidden, you’ll find this tropical hotspot in Squirrel Hill North. It’s a tiki bar with delicious cocktails inspired by the islands. With a mermaid at the head of the bar and fresh flowers adorning your glass, you might even forget you’re still in the city. The bar is known for its wide selection of rum and rum-inspired drinks. Ask about the special Rum Passport, which lists some of their latest master mixtures. Nothing here is pre-mixed, everything is fresh and put together right in front of you—and you’ll love it all.
Con Alma, which means “with soul” in Spanish, is a relatively new bar, but with an absolutely classic feel. One of its biggest draws is the jazz music coming from both a rotating line-up of the top musicians in Pittsburgh as well as world-class visiting players. Con Alma has become the heart of Pittsburgh’s jazz revival. You’ll find it on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside.
There isn’t a spot in the place, which is always crowded elbow-to-elbow, where one can’t see the stage, and their excellent selection of cocktails and wines guarantees a good time. The executive chef is also behind the scenes cooking up an astoundingly delicious menu of Latin cuisine for those moments when you feel like you need a bit more than just something to quench your thirst.
Have Fun But Be Responsible
Although all of the establishments above have great things to offer, it’s important to remember not to overdo it. If you find that maybe you’ve had a bit too much to drink, stay where you are until you’re feeling better or ask the bartender to help you arrange a ride home.
Unfortunately, sometimes, even when you’re following all the rules, things can go wrong and you may find yourself in need of some legal help.
