Many common driving mistakes can cause damage to your vehicle. One such common car mistake is ignoring when your gas is low and finding yourself stranded with an empty tank. This can be a scary situation, so here’s what to do if your car runs out of gas.
Pull Over Safely
If your car is out of gas, pull over safely on the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights. Your car will still be able to move forward, so you can use that force to park somewhere safe. You don’t want to remain parked on the road where there is traffic—that increases your risk of danger.
Call for Help
When you do find yourself in a situation where you don’t have gas, the best thing you can do is call a person or organization you trust if you don’t have quick access to gas. Call the following people and let them know about the situation and they can help you out:
- Roadside assistance
- Gas station
- Family member
Walk to a Gas Station
If you happen to run out of gas near a gas station, take a walk there and fill it up container. With the help of technology, you can locate a gas station that may be within walking distance. Pay for it as you normally would and use a container that the gas station—if you have your own, bring that. You should then return this container once you are finished filling up your car.
Fill Your Car
To fill your car with a container, you go to a gas pump and begin to fill it like you normally would fill your car. If you are trying to fill it up all the way, know how many gallons your car takes. Close the container tightly and head back towards your car. Use the tube attached to the gas container and carefully pour it back into your tank. Try to avoid any spillage, and continue to fill your gas tank until there is nothing else in your container.
